When eight mystery writers arrive at a legendary writer’s fog-shrouded island mansion in the North Atlantic, they think they’re ready for the Deadline Challenge—twenty-four restful hours to write as much of their new novel as possible. But the Deadline Challenge is anything but restful. In reality, the writers are brought together to solve a murder—the victim yet be determined, and the killer yet to strike. If a writer can design and execute a perfect murder and get away with it, they’ll win a million dollars (which is a lot of money for a writer). Who will live? Who will die? Who will survive the Deadline?

Inside Jeopardy! Live on Tour is coming to Washington, D.C., on Friday, April 11! It’s the sparkling indie rock project of Washington, D.C. singer-songwriter and former Miss America contender Caroline Weinroth, whose music captivates audiences around the world with playful lyricism, moody guitar riffs, retro song references, and dramatic pageantry. Cinema Hearts has shared the stage with Hozier, Bartees Strange, La Luz, The Ventures, Dengue Fever, and more.  While husband and wife bluegrass duo Gabby & Nick each have their own unique creative songwriting projects, the pair unites in performance for deep love and reverence for bluegrass songs. The folk duo interprets traditional bluegrass songs through contemporary folk harmonies and feel. The couple joins forces in song to celebrate the rich canons of Standard American Vernacular music.

Idol Beings is the musical partnership of vocalist Akua Allrich and bassist/producer Kris Funn. Born and raised in the DMV, the two have a philosophy about their creative process: “It is in moments of idleness that nodes of the brain that don’t usually communicate with each other spark connections. We created this project to express our art outside of our normal thought process — not for the sake of not being idle, but to become idols.”

Equally left and right-brained, she studied filmmaking and computer science in college and sometimes dreams in HTML. She hosts the My Imaginary Friends podcast, co-hosts the Ink & Magic podcast, and lives in Maryland with her feline dependents.

This author's talk is a part of our Freedom Stories Initiative. Freedom Stories is an initiative between a coalition of organizations and agencies in Prince George’s County, Maryland to provide antiracist and social justice programs. It discovers the histories, stories, names, and places where freedom from enslavement and oppression began in Prince George’s County. Through dialogue facilitated by programs, Freedom Stories strives to connect legacy to present-day Prince George’s families and provide insight into the determination and resilience of black people living in Prince George’s County in the 1700s. We explore history to create a more just and equitable present experience.

Vocalist composer Heidi Martin received the 2024 Berger-Carter Berger Fellowship from the Rutgers Dana Library Jazz Studies Dept., for her research on the Abbey Lincoln Estate. Martin composed and recorded nine compositions for the album ATTUNEMENT, set for release in late spring 2025. 

Shane Gillis is kicking off the new year with his biggest tour yet: Shane Gillis Live.
Beginning January 10, 2025, Gillis will embark on a global arena tour hitting 27 cities bringing his unmistakable comedic style to some of the biggest venues across North America and Europe. Gillis’ tour, in partnership with Outback Presents, includes stops at iconic arenas such as Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. on April 12th.

The highly-anticipated tour comes on the heels of his acclaimed Netflix special “Beautiful Dogs” which reached the Netflix Top 10 in five countries and spent two weeks in the US Top 10 list.

L.T.D. (which stands for Love, Togetherness, and Devotion) was formed in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1968, and is best known for hits like “Back in Love Again” and “Holding On,” as well as their soulful ballads such as “Love Ballad” and “Where Did We Go Wrong.” This tribute promises to take you back to the days of sweet love ballads with the music of Jeffrey Osborne and L.T.D.

The Grammy Award-winning Australian-born musician Linda May Han Oh is one of the jazz world's most sought-after bassists. She's played alongside Vijay Iyer, Pat Metheny, Billy Childs, Terri Lynne Carrington, Dave Douglas and Geri Allen and was featured as an animated cast member in the Pixar film Soul. But it's as a bandleader and composer that she truly shines. On her latest release, The Glass Hours, Oh joins a combo featuring Sara Serpa on vocals, Mark Turner on tenor sax, Obed Calvaire on percussion and Fabian Almazan on piano and electronics, for a work that proves her to be at the top of her powers. This is, in the artist's words, a collection of works based on abstract themes on the fragility of time and life, which WBGO Radio calls "a swirl of intricate designs, all carried out with steady composure." It is a project of extraordinarily lucid beauty and clarity, joining undeniable craft with deep emotion in a fashion that's rare in today's jazz landscape.

Internationally recognized as one of today’s premier chamber music ensembles, the American Brass Quintet continues its tradition of championing new works by distinguished American composers with a new commission from multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey. Tyshawn, a 2017 MacArthur fellow and a 2018 United States Artists Fellow, has previously written for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, International Contemporary Ensemble and Alarm Will Sound, among others.

 Since they started up together in 1971, The Seldom Scene has dexterously performed original and traditional songs while presenting fiery and soulful reinterpretations of material by Merle Haggard, James Taylor, and more. The concept of bluegrass unshackling itself from a conservative, straight-ahead mindset seems like a given now, when some of its biggest stars fill stadiums and cross over with mainstream audiences, but the continued presence of the Scene acts as a reminder that it wasn’t always so. Even if their playing style feels more at home in intimate clubs, where the audience can feel their exuberance radiating from the stage, the Scene’s elastic relationship to genre established an important precedent that encouraged their contemporaries and allowed bluegrass bands to expand their repertoire in ways that laid the groundwork for today’s bluegrass boom.

Ida Kavafian and Steven Tenenbom have each enjoyed varied careers as soloists, chamber musicians and teachers. As educators, both serve on faculty at Curtis Institute of Music, and as performers, they co-founded the exciting piano quartet Opus One. Join us as this husband and wife duo take to the stage to perform a recital as part of our Masterful Strings series.

Daniela Soledade and Nate Najar’s captivating Bossa Nova performances have resonated in jazz-loving capitals like Paris and London, blending English and Portuguese songs with tender beauty and syncopated rhythms. Rooted in a pandemic-era livestream series, their repertoire spans generations, showcasing Daniela’s Brazilian music heritage and celebrating the genre romantically. Set six years after the Mongol invasion of Neyshabur, Gaat narrates the resistance and struggle of the people of Shiraz against the Mongol army, as they attempt to invade Takht-e Jamshid, destroy the Jaam-e Jam, and eradicate the Persian language in Iran. This project provided a cultural image of Iran’s national treasures to the world and served as a reminder of patriotism and self-reliance to the youth.

This special gathering will bring together Vietnamese American youth, artists, cultural leaders, and community members from across the country to celebrate our heritage and explore the evolving nature of our identity.

The One Thousand and One Nights are a series of fables within a singular overarching fable, that of the royal bride Scheherazade's gambit for survival by spinning scores of tales to keep her cruel Bluebeard of a husband at bay. Her name has become synonymous with the telling of folklore, but Scheherazade finds her match in one of the masters of the retold fairy tale, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The great Russian composer's symphonic suite takes the titular Persian storyteller as both inspiration and muse for among the most colorful, invigorating, beloved and fantastical works of the classical canon. Led by special guest conductor Marin Alsop, Music Director of the National Orchestral Institute + Festival, Scheherezade will be performed by one of the classical world's most respected ensembles and one of Maryland’s most significant cultural institutions: the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO). When musical historians look back on our current era, it's increasingly likely that they will consider Cécile McLorin Salvant to be one of the greatest vocalists of her generation. A winner of the prestigious MacArthur "Genius" Grant, Salvant has released seven highly acclaimed LPs before the age of 35, three of which have won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal album. Her latest release, 2023's Mélusine, truly a triumph, was presented primarily in French. Her fairy-tale theater work, Ogresse, has toured to The Kennedy Center and stages around the world. This May, Salvant will perform at Carnegie Hall but you can catch this singular artist at The Clarice first!

Penelope Shvarts has played both classical and flamenco guitar since she was five years old and is currently studying at the Peabody Institute, where she was given an award to continue her research into non-male composers and their works for guitar. Vibe/Vibrance, a group exhibit featuring Chee Kung, Jenny Nordstrom, Sookkyung Park, Alexandra Sherman, and April Wright, will create a zestful and immersive environment – encompassing various disciplines and filling the main gallery with color and purpose. Kung’s geometrical assemblages provide structure and chaos, where Nordstrum’s photographs depict aged, but resonant structures from around the world. Park and Wright extend their artwork beyond the walls, creating an expansive viewing experience, while Sherman’s drawings bring an otherworldly, yet semi-historical perspective to the earth and what lies within. Together, these artists provide illustrious approaches to their craft that combine into a beautiful, yet unexplainable story.

Yunchan Lim is a classical pianist sensation and “one-in-a-million talent” (Dallas Morning News), growing to global stardom after becoming the youngest person to ever win gold at the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at the age of 18.

Experience the vibrant beat of samulnori under the direction of Sebastian Wang. This modern incarnation of traditional Korean folk music celebrates harvest time and provides a lively soundtrack to dancing. The ensemble is comprised of four types of percussion instruments—an hourglass drum, a barrel drum, a small gong and a large gong—each representing a natural element: rain, clouds, lightning and wind, respectively.

Our naturalists tailor the topics, and you can even request specific ones to suit your homeschool needs by calling or emailing us at clearwaternaturecenter@pgparks.com.

The program is held at Clearwater Nature Center (301-297-4575). All children must be registered individually in advance through ParksDirect. Please note, the program will be canceled if there are insufficient registrations by the end of the day before the program.

As the first multi-generational recreation complex in the county, the arts programming follows suit by presenting arts events for all ages.
