The Washington Ballet Presents Giselle

Performances: Apr 28 - May 1, various hours

Giselle, the quintessential Romantic Era ballet, embodies fantasy, etherealism, and supernaturalism. This two-act ballet tells the tragic story of Giselle, a peasant girl, who falls for the charms of the deceitful Count Albrecht. When the truth is unveiled, Giselle dies of heartbreak. Deep in the forest, she rises from her grave and dances with the beautiful and irresistible Wilis. As the spirits of maidens who were wronged by their lovers, they take revenge in the night by compelling men to dance until they perish. In the end, Giselle not only saves Albrecht from the Wilis, she saves herself from becoming one of them.

Or you could join us virtually for an experience of artistic fusion in an interpretive performance by Washington Ballet Company dancers Maki Onuki and Tamás Krizsa, featuring the debut of a new, original score by film composer and TWB collaborator Blake Neely. The event concludes with a panel discussion with the performers.

Commissioned by the Cathedral as a complement to Pendry's "Les Colombes," Washington Ballet dancer and choreographer Tamás Krizsa created a site-specific pas de deux titled "Unbound." Inspired by the power and grace of Pendry's installation and Neely's original score, dancers Onuki and Krizsa are but two doves in the flock of 2,000, having broken off to explore. Together, they find balance and comfort in each other, and as part of the flock, as they soar through the iconic nave to live music. The ballet is a physical embodiment of the themes of hope, peace, and unity that doves represent.

Registrants will be sent a follow-up email with a link to view the event. Tickets are pay-what-you-wish, starting at $10. Watch it online.

Washington Ballet: Balanchine + Ashton

Performances: Feb 19-23

The Washington Ballet: Julie Kent, Artistic Director BALANCHINE + ASHTON Featuring The Washington Ballet Orchestra

wb-balanchine-ashton-large.jpg

From a lively and jazzy Broadway production to divine elegance, witness bellwether ballets by 20th-century dance titans George Balanchine and Sir Frederick Ashton. BALANCHINE + ASHTON provides a mixed repertoire of styles and opposites that are still relevant to today’s audiences. Ashton’s Birthday Offering and Balanchine’s Slaughter on Tenth Avenue are both company premieres. Balanchine’s exuberant and athletic Allegro Brillante and the somber Méditation for Thaïs, one of Ashton’s more sublime and legato creations, round out the program.

This season, The Washington School of Ballet is celebrating 75 years of providing the highest level of dance training to thousands of students in the DC Metropolitan area. In honor of this milestone anniversary and to honor founder Mary Day, Artistic Director Julie Kent has created her own Défilé. This miniature ballet will be presented before each performance of BALANCHINE + ASTON and showcases and honors our talented student body
