Cedric Williams: Cement Factory Series

  • Montpelier Arts Center (map)

Exhibit: June 3 - July 7

Open daily, 10 am-5 pm | Public Reception: June 13, 7-9 pm

Cedric Williams is interested in observing the ways in which buildings, surfaces, and structures change once they become abandoned and cease to have a socio-economic function. The process of erosion can affect structures in different ways. The accumulation of organic matter provides a basis for the growth of plants and trees, roots begin to undermine the structures, metals begin to rust/oxidize, and slowly the original form of the structures is transformed. If left, the structures eventually crumble. Williams has always used photographs and paintings to periodically catalogue the decay of the different sites that have interested him. However, over the last few years, he has begun to explore the possibilities of utilizing the photographic images not just as framed works that can be exhibited, but placed in “settings” that are compatible with the images.

This has involved introducing a variety of different methods and materials in his work that are created in the studio. Working on wood panels or heavy weight card/vellum as his base, Williams uses plaster, sand and gravel, dried roots, and simulated “distressed” materials to gain texture and depth, as well as dried organic materials and found objects, sometimes from the actual sites. In this way, he begins to build an “environment” that supports the photographic images used. He will use certain photographs or combinations of photographs repeatedly in order to explore different “environments” or settings for them. However, he does not attempt to form a narrative link between the photographic images and the associated materials. The materials used are to be regarded as an extension of the images; their reference indicating the more diverse processes of aging and decay.

For his show at the Montpelier Arts Center, Williams has chosen a series of works dealing with the decaying Konterra Cement Plant in Kensington, Maryland, which was closed in 2001. He discovered the factory in 2004, prior to its subsequent demolition. Over the next year, he made numerous visits to the site, taking photographs during the winter and summer. At this time, as the site was in disuse, the structures were beginning to decay, and so the site became an ideal subject for him to focus on. Williams uses photographs as the basis for his work and, in some cases, materials found at the site, to create artworks that become an assemblage of materials that provide texture and depth.

Travis Childers, a recipient of several awards and grants, including recognition from the renowned paint manufacturer Liquitex, uses his art to engage viewers in a unique exploration of memory and daily life. This body of work features intricate mixed media collages with elements that focus on whole faces, eyes, and vegetation. Childers’ innovative use of tape in his collages highlight the way details can be both preserved and lost over time, intentionally or unintentionally.

Childers’ work is rooted in the ordinary, which he elevates through his creative process. As the artist explains, “My creativity does not come from the extraordinary but the everyday and the mundane, and with those I find endless amounts of inspiration.” His art challenges viewers to see their daily activities in a new light, making the familiar unfamiliar through his compelling techniques.

Travis Childers holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. His work has been exhibited across the United States and the United Kingdom, both independently and as part of group shows.

The Lone Bellow
Oct

1:00 PM13:00

The Lone Bellow

“I want it to bring comfort,” The Lone Bellow guitarist Brian Elmquist says. “But it’s not all hard conversations. There’s a lot of light and some dancing that needs to happen.” Brian is reflecting on Half Moon Light, the band’s highly anticipated new album.

Half Moon Light is an artistic triumph worked toward for years, earned not by individual posturing, but by collective determination and natural growth. With earthy three-part harmonies and songwriting as provocative as it is honest, the trio made up of Brian, lead vocalist Zach Williams, and multi-instrumentalist Kanene Donehey Pipkin creates sparks that make a stranger’s life matter or bring our sense of childlike wonder roaring back. On Half Moon Light, The Lone Bellow mix light and dark to muster a complex ode to memory, a call for hope, and an exercise in empathy. Anchored in the acoustic storytelling that first so endeared the band to fans and critics, Half Moon Light also takes more chances, experimenting with textures and instrumental fillips to create a full-bodied music experience. The result is The Lone Bellow’s most sophisticated work to date.

Maggie Miles

Maggie Miles

Maggie Miles is a 20-year-old alternative artist originally from the Western hills of Northern Virginia, but don't let herfolk surroundings fool you. Raised on 80’s hair bands and 70’s rock, Maggie draws her sound from the soulful vocals of vintage artists like Stevie Nicks and Ann Wilson, which she dresses in fun pop grooves and disco tech. She attempts to address the conflicts of this life through sharp-hitting lyrics textured in funky grooves that paint a compelling picture of our imperfect existence. The contrast of her jazzy sounds and perceptive lyrics are a result of her commitment to connectivity through the honest expression of the human condition.
