Freedom Stories: Author Talk w/ Leslye Penelope

Leslye Penelope has been writing since she could hold a pen and loves getting lost in the worlds in her head. She is an award-winning fantasy and paranormal romance author. Her novel Song of Blood & Stone was chosen as one of TIME Magazine's "100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time". Equally left and right-brained, she studied filmmaking and computer science in college and sometimes dreams in HTML. She hosts the My Imaginary Friends podcast, co-hosts the Ink & Magic podcast, and lives in Maryland with her feline dependents.

This author's talk is a part of our Freedom Stories Initiative. Freedom Stories is an initiative between a coalition of organizations and agencies in Prince George’s County, Maryland to provide antiracist and social justice programs. It discovers the histories, stories, names, and places where freedom from enslavement and oppression began in Prince George’s County. Through dialogue facilitated by programs, Freedom Stories strives to connect legacy to present-day Prince George’s families and provide insight into the determination and resilience of black people living in Prince George’s County in the 1700s. We explore history to create a more just and equitable present experience.

Performances: Feb 19-26, various hours.

Out of the Vineyard (OOTV) is written by esteemed playwright Psalmayene 24, who masterfully adapts the groundbreaking historical work "A Question of Freedom: The Families Who Challenged Slavery from the Nation’s Founding to Civil War" by historian William G. Thomas III, for the stage.

Directed and choreographed by Tony Thomas, Out of the Vineyard highlights the families, names, and places, illuminating stories of quests for freedom and opportunity against systematic racism. By exploring how slavery has shaped our societies and encouraging audiences to think critically about the legacy of hiding historical details, Out of the Vineyard promotes a deeper understanding of the issues facing us today. The play inspires audiences to work toward a more just and equitable future.

Unraveling over seven decades, the enslaved families of Prince George’s County, Maryland, including the Butlers, Queens, Mahoneys, Bells, and more, embarked on a relentless legal quest for freedom. These brave families confronted formidable slavery within the court system, leading their crusade to the highest echelons of justice: the Supreme Court.

Part love story, part historical excavation, Fantastic Negrito’s extraordinary new album, White Jesus Black Problems, is an exhilarating ode to the power of family and the enduring resilience of our shared humanity. Inspired by the illegal, interracial romance of his seventh generation grandparents—a white indentured servant and an enslaved Black man—in 1750s Virginia, the collection is bold and thought provoking, grappling with racism, capitalism, and the very meaning of freedom itself, all without ever losing sight of the desire and determination at the heart of the tale.
