Together, these artists provide illustrious approaches to their craft that combine into a beautiful, yet unexplainable story.

Travis Childers, a recipient of several awards and grants, including recognition from the renowned paint manufacturer Liquitex, uses his art to engage viewers in a unique exploration of memory and daily life. This body of work features intricate mixed media collages with elements that focus on whole faces, eyes, and vegetation. Childers’ innovative use of tape in his collages highlight the way details can be both preserved and lost over time, intentionally or unintentionally.

Childers’ work is rooted in the ordinary, which he elevates through his creative process. As the artist explains, “My creativity does not come from the extraordinary but the everyday and the mundane, and with those I find endless amounts of inspiration.” His art challenges viewers to see their daily activities in a new light, making the familiar unfamiliar through his compelling techniques.

Travis Childers holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. His work has been exhibited across the United States and the United Kingdom, both independently and as part of group shows.

“Chosen Family,” curated by Dr. Lauren Davidson

Exhibit: Jan 22 - Mar 9; Mon-Fri 10am-7pm; Sat: 10am-4pm

Opening Reception: Jan 27, 5-8pm | Artist and Curator Talk: Feb 17, 2-4pm

Chosen Family brings together the work of three sets of emerging African American artists who are also close friends: Omari Jesse, Bria Edwards, and Olivia Bruce; Wesley Clark and Rodney (Buck!) Herring; Austin (Auz) Miles and Angelique Scott. Through their art, viewers are given an intimate look into their friendships which have grown and evolved over several years, some from childhood. They have developed their artistic practice, supported one another through triumphs and failures, and at times, have even been each other’s muses. What makes these friendships unique? How have they influenced each other creatively? How do artists support each other in the challenging visual arts industry? The idea of this professional and personal alignment becomes more nuanced when seen through the lens of the Black experience. This exhibition will consider these connections through an exploration of the visual and conceptual elements of their artistic practice.

Exhibit: Bao-Yen Nguyen: Sweet Memories

  • Montpelier Arts Center (map)

Exhibit thru Aug 7. Gallery open daily, 10am-5pm

In Bao-Yen Nguyen's exhibition, she explores the effects of the Vietnam War through a socio-ethnic lens and how the country's past connects to the Americanized present. Having been born after the war, she never recognized the effect the war had on her life. Lacking perspective and understanding of the war and its impact on Vietnamese-American contemporary life, she uses photojournalism and art to stimulate dialogue between the two periods: past and present. Nguyen strives to portray a narrative that reflects the impact of the war through a combination of digital manipulation and a more traditional process.
