Young Yeila dreams of being a superstar, but her lack of confidence gives her awful stage fright. With advice from her mother and mentors, Yeila begins to find her roots, gain confidence, and be her amazing self!

Travel with Yeila as she visits her grandmother in Cuba to add salsa flavor to her own hip hop style. The audience gets to dance along in this dynamic participation play where one actress creates three generations of lively women. Yeila’s fun discovery of her multicultural heritage is written and performed by Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Paige Hernandez and features music by Nick Tha 1da.

Where We Meet brings works from the collections of the Howard University Gallery of Art and The Phillips Collection into conversation. The selections reflect a continuum of artistic dialogue between two storied Washington, DC, institutions that have endured for almost a century. 

Featured in this installation are works by artists acquired early in the life of both institutions, including Howard University professors Loïs Mailou Jones and James Lesesne Wells, as well as works by seminal artists from each collection. This presentation reflects the overlapping histories of the Phillips and Howard, revealing an early and evolving relationship developed through a common interest in collecting, stewardship, and providing access to art.

Using paper that was invented in China and introduced into Korea around the 3rd Century, Sookkyung Park utilizes this material to explore the connections between people. Through the repetitive process of folding and threading paper, the artist expresses harmony and community through structure and form. Paper has a rich cultural significance as she grew up in Korea where the windows and walls were made of paper. In her exhibit, she intends to define the flexible characteristics of paper, its indispensability along with its strong natural power of being made from wood.

The Quintet’s line-up includes trumpeter Muneer Nasser, pianist Allyn Johnson, saxophonist Elijah Easton, bassist James King, Jr., and drummer John Lamkin III. This all-star cast of musicians recently released the jazz album A Soldier's Story, dedicated to Muneer’s father, bassist and jazz great Jamil Nasser.
