The NOI+F 2025 season comes to a close with an evening of world-changing music, with grandiose themes and big ideas given musical shape. The much-in-demand composer Viet Cuong's 2024 work, John and Jim, is a playfully melodic composition centering on the relationship of John Arthur and Jim Obergefell, the titular plaintiff of the Obergefell v. Hodges 2015 Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage in America. This new transcript of John and Jim for full orchestra, commissioned exclusively by NOI+F, will debut nearly ten years to the day after the passing of that highly influential case. We continue on with 20th-century German Romantic composer, Richard Strauss. Strauss' short comic opera Der Rosenklavier and the symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustra are generally acknowledged as his best known works. Indeed, the modern association of Zarathustra's opening with Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey imbues Strauss' opus with an indelible spirit of expansion and evolution. These masterpieces are squarely in the interpretive wheelhouse of Austrian-born conductor David Danzmayr, making his NOI+F debut. Danzmayr's stellar seasons as director of the Oregon Symphony have rendered him one of his generation's most celebrated conductors.

Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony • NOI Philharmonic

  • The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Dekelboum Concert Hall (map)

Led by the Reno Philharmonic's Laura Jackson, this ambitious program includes three centuries of melodic fireworks. We begin with Maurice Ravel's 1919 ballet La valse, a wildly romantic, whirling 13-minute score that both celebrates and eulogizes the Viennese Waltz and inspired generations of choreographers. Next is Grammy Award-nominated composer Anna Clyne's 2025 PALETTE (an NOI+F co-commission with the St Louis Symphony, BBC Philharmonic and New World Symphony), a concerto that explores the symbiosis between music and visual art. Clyne's practice as a painter inspires the composition's bubbling synesthesia, capturing each of her canvases—rendered in Plum, Amber, Lava, Ebony, Teal, Tangerine and Emerald, to form the work's acronymic title—in seven ravishing movements, awash in a storm of gesture, texture, light, color and form. We close with a performance of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s epic 1878 Symphony No. 4. This masterpiece, in turns melancholy and bombastic, acts as precious insight into the beautiful and tempestuous inner life of the composer’s genius.

This rousing new concerto—co-commissioned by the Aspen Music Festival and School, Carnegie Hall and NOI+F—revels in the heightened idioms of blues and gospel tradition, layered with masterful solos performed by a guest selection of Black principal players from leading orchestras, including Demarre McGill (flute), Anthony McGill (clarinet), Titus Underwood (oboe) and Andrew Brady (bassoon). A founding member of The Blacknificent 7 composer collective, which counts Jessie Montgomery and Damien Geter among its ranks, Barnes makes her NOI+F debut under the baton of crowd-favorite conductor and NOI+F Music Director, Marin Alsop.
